On Saturday, June 13th, 2015 I will be sitting on the judging panel at Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival in Midland, Ontario (I will be the one in elastic waist pants, a bib and syrup on my chin. Who am I kidding? I never miss my mouth!). An entire day devoted to stuffing my face full of Canada’s favourite dessert – and then, deciding which one is “BEST”? I really do have a great job! I am super excited and honoured to be part of this festival. If you are looking for a “sweet” Ontario staycation, come join in the fun in beautiful downtown Midland, Ontario.
This year, the festival has added a new “event” to the weekend: The Butter Tart Trot ~ yup, a 5k run and a 2.5K family fun walk/run. My two favourite pastimes (running and eating) together in one awesome weekend. I am looking forward to eating & sweating with you June 13th & 14th, 2015. Click here for more festival info.
To get things rolling for the festival (and I’m not talking pastry), Barb Rowlandson (festival coordinator), and myself, are taking over Rogers Daytime Simcoe with a Butter Tart Festival themed show. Raisins, or no raisins? Nuts, or no nuts? Firm, or runny filling? A full hour of: ooey-gooey debating about what makes the “pefect” butter tart, and plenty of fun filled info about Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival.
To kick off the cardinal Butter Tart Trot (I love saying that) I am going to share a coffee house inspired post run shake. I developed this recipe for Mizuno Run Club Blog made with Almond Fresh Coconut Beverage. After a good summer sweat, it is crucial to refuel within 30 minutes post exercise. Now, from post Butter Tart Trot fuel, to the star of the show: Butter Tarts. I’m not the best at making pastry, so I make a shortbread like crust (flour, sugar, butter = easy peasy), press into the bottom of a baking pan, prepare a fab filling, pour, bake, and cut into squares.
